WIGL–“Wrapped
in God’s Love”
– linking faith communities
to families with AIDS
The “Wrapped in God’s Love”
program provides for the practical needs of the poorest of the poor
living with HIV/AIDS. WIGL showers bring together diverse populations
in one of the most familiar social rituals – the baby shower.
Area churches and other concerned groups sponsor showers for low-income
pregnant women who are HIV infected. These women are already marginalized
by their HIV status, but are often further outcast due to poverty,
race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, drug addiction and the victimization
of domestic violence. Gifts of diapers, clothing, car seats, strollers
and the like offer those with a compassionate heart the opportunity
to help the children of low-income, HIV+ parents. The program has
expanded to provide for basic needs for older children, the needs
of patients for basic toiletries, and even food and clothing.
From our years of experience, we have found that
there are other needs presented by parents and their children living
with HIV/AIDS. Even after exhausting available resources, there
are often times when essential needs are not met. WIGL is our way
to reach out to respond when there is a crisis situation. Though
not a social service program, we know only too well that there are
times when our clients “fall through the cracks.” Unmet
needs for food, clothing or shelter can create a crisis for our
clients that compromise their ability to care for themselves and
their families. Sadly, these families often include infants and
young children. Consequently, AIDS Family Services has expanded
the WIGL program to reach out and wrap these families in God’s
love when there is nowhere else to turn.
